On a small lot in the Temescal neighborhood of Oakland, a 290 square foot ADU (accessory dwelling unit) replaced an existing dilapidated garage. The new building is designed in an understated style to match the existing Craftsman bungalow on the property. The main, multi-function space opens out to a existing fig tree, a focal point of the garden space. A small but functional bathroom allows the new building to function as a guest room or short-term rental. A gabled wood ceiling, two skylights, and a bamboo floor create an airy and inviting space.
