Surf Colony
The Santa Cruz Surf Colony was designed to be a 10-unit microhotel catering to the surf community. Located in a rapidly revitalizing zone of the city’s downtown, the project efficiently utilized a challenging site. A retail store was to anchor the project on busy Pacific Avenue, while the rest of the first floor would have accommodated parking. The second and third floors were each to have five two-bedroom suites. A large roof deck, the heart of the project, was to be accessed via an oversized elevator sized for people, surfboards, and bicycles. It featured a shared open space with surfboard and bicycle storage, a spa, barbecue, fire pit, planting, and seating areas. While fully entitled and permitted, this project was not realized due to difficulty in securing financing.
